This is my first attempt at blogging and to achieve this I first had to set-up this blog. How hard could that be... Millions of blogs out there I am a Dev it can't too difficult can it...
Well I tried a few ways like hosting with Wordpress (not a fan, don't know why just not.) then asking around on twitter found that a lot of Dev's use Ghost so I head over there (https://ghost.org/) to take a look. It gives you the option to self host or they will do it for you and at the time of writing this the price was:
Yes that is $79 per month which for a little blog is a bit expensive if you ask me. So what was the next option, well I am keen on self-hosting so how about azure.
Azure to the rescue
So I head over to Azure (https://portal.azure.com) and as always the best place to start is with the Create New Resource and type into the search box Ghost
Surely it can't be that easy can it... Well yes it can so Click the icon I circled.
Now Click Create
Complete the boxes as you normally would for any Azure resource click Create and hey presto you have a new blog.
Setting up your new blog site
So now you have a new blog site set-up it's time to customise it after all you don't want the basic Ghost text and names in your blog. I started with doing a quick web search for a custom theme and found a great one called Uno-Zen which you can find here https://github.com/Kikobeats/uno-zen
To change your settings and to customise your new blog after the url enter
then you will be asked for a username and password which you can set before editing all the settings and uploading some photo's
Other things I did
The other things I did as I wanted to have a custom domain name rather than
cliffsblog.azurewebsites.com I purchased a domain name from GoDaddy then using CloudFlare (https://www.cloudflare.com/) I added a free SSL cert and DNS routing of the domain name to the Azure App Service.
So that's how I went from no blog to a very cheap (Actually free with my monthly azure credit!) blog that you have just read.
Hope you find it just as easy to set-up a blog and if you do leave a comment in the discus section below so I can head over and return the favour of reading your blog.
Must go have a plane to fly...
